Commercial vs Free Software Comparison

On your personal blog:
Post I: Define the following and give two examples of each (freeware, shareware, and commercial software you use at home and/or school)

  • freeware (2 examples you use)
  • shareware (2 examples you use)
  • open source (do you use?  if so, give an example)
  • commercial software (2 examples you use)
Assignment 2: Read the article based on a US Case study on software Piracy
http://www.computerweekly.com/Articles/2009/10/23/238272/Man-jailed-for-selling-pirated-software-on-eBay.htm#Scene_1

Now read another short article http://www.computerweekly.com/Articles/2002/11/26/191231/Woman-gets-nine-years-on-pirate-software-rap.htm.

Post II: On your blog compare and contrast the how software piracy impacts society vs how freeware and shareware impacts society.

When finished with the above, watch and comment on fellow students' screencast posted on their blogs.
·   Was the voice clear and loud?
·   As a user could you complete the task using the tutorial?
·   Was your tutorial – 3 to 5 minutes long with appropriate speed?
·   Did they use appropriate vocabulary terms?
·   Did the mouse movements have a purpose?

  1. Freeware- freeware is software that is provided without charge.
Shareware- software that is available free of charge; may be distributed for evaluation with a fee requested for additional features or a manual etc.

yes i do use these applications all the time, some examples i use are downloading free apps. on my ipod. And for freeware some examples are itunes if you buy like a MAC computer. An example of commercial software would be like microsoft office or stuff like that.

  2. • Freeware - freeware is software you can download, pass around, and distribute without any initial payment.
Examples – mods or modifications to other programs that people design, and Frostwire uses and sharing system so that people can pass around the information.

    • Shareware - you can use the product for a trial period and then decide if you want to keep it.
Examples – xboxlive has a trial period and then you can chose to keep it or not but you have to pay to keep using it. And most subscriptions to things give you a trial period

    • Open Source - is any computer software distributed under a license which allows users to change or share the software freely.
Examples – Blogs and public communication sites like FaceBook and MySpace

    • Commercial Software – are programs that are sold to the consumer and have a specific use.
Examples – virus protection, and a photo or camera program
