On your personal blog:

  • freeware (2 examples you use)
  • shareware (2 examples you use)
  • open source (do you use?  if so, give an example)
  • commercial software (2 examples you use)
Assignment 2: Read the article based on a US Case study on software Piracy
http://www.computerweekly.com/Articles/2009/10/23/238272/Man-jailed-for-selling-pirated-software-on-eBay.htm#Scene_1

Now read another short article http://www.computerweekly.com/Articles/2002/11/26/191231/Woman-gets-nine-years-on-pirate-software-rap.htm.

Post II: On your blog compare and contrast the how software piracy impacts society vs how freeware and shareware impacts society.

When finished with the above, watch and comment on fellow students' screencast posted on their blogs.
·   Was the voice clear and loud?
·   As a user could you complete the task using the tutorial?
·   Was your tutorial – 3 to 5 minutes long with appropriate speed?
·   Did they use appropriate vocabulary terms?
·   Did the mouse movements have a purpose?

Screencast

Rules to follow when creating Screencasts.
  • Plan, Plan, Plan: plan out exactly what you want to demonstrate on your screencast and practice.  It should be useful information.
  • Termonology used should be uniform.
  • Mouse movement should have a purpose.
  • Speak loud and clear at normal speed
  • Pause recording when needed.
  • Don't bore your audience by typing large amounts of text; prepare  documents needed ahead of time.
  • Keep recordings short; 3 to 5 minutes good rule of thumb.

Screencasting

One netiquette rule to follow is "share your knowledge".   Screencasting is a great way to share what you know with others.  There are many sites on the web where you can find "how to" videos.

Go to the following link and listen to the video on tables.  Topic:  How to insert table in Word, format bullets, add column, and format.  http://www.screencast-o-matic.com/watch/cXV6elXPW . . . it's not perfect . . . After watching the video see how well you can complete the assignment from handout.

When finished discuss how you think you did.  How can the video be improved.  What mistakes were made on the video?  Leave your response to these questions in the comment section here.

Now, go to http://www.screencast-o-matic.com and setup your own account. Record your user name and password on the Word document where you save all your logins.  Create a screencast on how to add a your name and filename and path in the footer of a Word document.  Post the link to your blog.  Before you begin, practice what you want to record.  Think about the words you'll use.

Screen shot tutorials

The following must be viewed at home since it's on YouTube and YouTube is blocked at school. Select the link and view:

We will creating screen shots tutorials where you are required to show/teach someone how to do something using your computer. We'll be using a site that will record what you see on the screen. Your job this week is to come up with an idea of what you want to demonstrate.  For example, lets say you want to demonstrate how to insert pictures in a word document, add a border and make the text wrap around the image in different ways.  Using your computer and microphone, you would create a tutorial.  What shows up on the screen is recorded along with your voice.
